A child’s self-image also develops as a result of these relationships. However, for young children, making friends can be an intimidating task. Here are some tips for parents to foster positive relationships with other children. At home, parents should model good behavior, respond to and address children’s tears, and create a positive environment for their children.

Fostering Positive Relationships

One way to foster positive relationships is to engage your child in play with other children continuously. Playing with other children develops a child’s social skills by letting him express his feelings and observe how other people react to him or her. Children learn best by interacting with other children in their age group, so parents should focus on engaging their spend time with them. By doing this, parents can help their child develop confidence, focus, and learn. It will also help them develop their academic skills.

Problem-Solving Skills

When observing your child’s play, you can foster problem-solving skills by rewarding their efforts. It is also important to acknowledge their ideas and let them try to come up with a solution on their own. Encourage them to share their ideas and express themselves freely. These are all key to building your child’s confidence and emotional intelligence. This way, they’ll know that their ideas matter.

Help your child to brainstorm problem-solving ideas by asking them to name their emotions. While the solutions they come up with aren’t necessarily “good” or “bad,” your child will have to evaluate the pros and cons of each solution. Once they’ve brainstormed a few ideas, help them to evaluate their choices and choose the best one. By letting your child take the lead and provide solutions, you’ll be boosting your child’s emotional intelligence and confidence.

Developing an Emotional Vocabulary

A growing body of research links early childhood emotional competence to later academic success. Early Learning for Every Child Today (ELECT) programs focus on developing children’s self-regulation and emotional competence. Young children with poor social-emotional skills are at greater risk of low academic achievement, behavioural problems, peer rejection, and school dropout. Fortunately, there are many ways to promote emotional competence and emotional intelligence in young children.

At Angelic Treasures Christian Daycare, our childcare program is based on the ELECT (Early Learning for Every Child Today document. We use the ELECT as a guide to plan our programming, ensuring that activities are developmentally appropriate and challenging at the same time. How Does Learning Happen is also implemented daily.  At our daycare near Toronto, Mississauga and Brampton—we include systematic conversations with children about their thoughts and feelings. This requires collaboration between teachers and parents. When parents and teachers support children in developing emotional skills, children will be better equipped to manage their own emotions and cope with the inevitable setbacks of daily life. In a typical childcare program based on the ELECT document, caregivers engage in causal conversations and use language to foster emotional understanding and competency.

Learning to Accept Others’ Feelings

The best way to build emotional intelligence skills in your child is to discuss the emotions that they (and others) experience. As a parent, you should take the time to talk about these feelings and help them learn new words and phrases. You can also help your child learn to solve problems by limiting inappropriate behaviours and defining limits. Often, questions such as “how would you feel if…” can help your child to develop empathizing skills. By establishing a “calming kit”—a kit full of tools and sensory toys/items—you can help your child understand emotions and how to deal with them appropriately.

When your child expresses negative emotions, you should acknowledge and address these feelings and their root causes. Rejecting, minimizing or ignoring negative feelings teaches your child that they are inappropriate and shameful and that only pleasant feelings are acceptable. Eventually, these feelings will manifest themselves in aggressive behaviour, nightmares, or negative social situations. It is important to accept and discuss your child’s feelings, regardless of the complexity. You can also model and address these emotions with songs and videos that outline strategies for coping.
